Welcome to ‘Art in the Churches’

Curating spectacular art events in Churches

Churches are full of art already, so the concept of art in churches is nothing new, although the massive scale of our conceptual installations can take people by surprise.

We pair together outstanding artists with spectacular churches to create unforgettable experiences for visitors, not just for art lovers, but for everyone.

We have three objectives: -

·        Our churches are an intrinsic part of our village and towns which need support to expand their community use. We do not want to see more and more being converted to other uses.

·        In an increasingly litigious world, artists cannot find venues to use for public art. We can organise the most spectacular churches for them, allowing them to create public art unhindered and at scale.

·        To deliver a great day out which is fun and cultural, that everyone can enjoy.

Not many people visit churches, but staging an art event encourages people in. Not only do our visitors experience the artwork, they also discover the extraordinary buildings, many with exceptional architecture, craftsmanship and history, as well as that rarefied atmosphere of tranquillity and peace that you can only get inside a church.

A bronze sculpture of a bishop and monks on a medieval boat, set on a stone plinth outside the West End of Ripon Cathedral.

The Bishop is Willibrord and it is in the 7th century. Willibrord is from Northumbia, and he is a student of Saint Wilfrid who built Ripon Cathedral in 672AD. He is travelling to Fresia (now part of the Netherlands) on missionary work. Willibord subsequently becomes the first Bishop of Utrecht, and he is the patron saint of both The Netherlands and Luxemburg, yet it all started in windswept Northumberland!
